How to control Anger ?

Anger Management

  • Anger is an unpleasant emotion
  • It might be generated as a resultant of a chain reaction.
  • It might be a release of pent up negative energy stored in one’s unconscious mind.

Do you get angry?

We all tend to get angry some time or the other and so must you.

Have you ever thought that why are you angry?

Let me try to explain!

Anger is generally a camouflaged response to some hidden or unacknowledged stimuli. Many a times it is transferred or displaced to a non deserving target.

For example,

If the Boss in the office barks at you and you have no other option but to tolerate, the anger generated and suppressed at that time hides out in your subconscious mind. It keeps irritating you and is reflected many a times in your behavior, till you get a chance to release it. You probably might release it by hitting a dog for no reason or scolding your servant without his fault.

You would not know why you did it?

A perusal will make you realize that your anger actually targeted at your Boss. Your sub conscious mind translates the dog to be the boss and you get the equivalent satisfaction of hitting back.

Who knows your Boss also released his pent up frustration on you!

A Psychologist can well understand such camouflaged and unexplainable behavior sequences.

Thus, anger releases your adrenalin and instills Fight, Flight or Fright.

It means that-

1. You might shout and hit when angry
2. You might just walk out or run away
3. You might sulk and feel depressed when angry!

What so ever,

1. It is good for you to release your pent up anger.
2. It is very essential to do so, because the longer it stays with in you, the more damage it does to your peace of mind.
3. It might either ooze out by and by or might simply erupt in a much distorted behavioral action, which could be unethical or immoral.

However, your relief might create stress for others related to you or around you.

Therefore, you must make an effort to overcome anger without harming others. Get rid of your anger in a way which releases you but does not harm you or others around you.

Try these practical solutions towards Overcoming Anger

1. When angry, close your fist tightly. Keep your thumb inside the fist.

This way you can check your hasty action of hitting. It will give you time to gather self control.

You might be wondering, how just tightening your fist can control your anger!
Let me logically explain it.

1. Your thumb represents your Ego. Thumbs Up is a winning indication.
2. Many a times anger involves Ego issues because of which the person does not want to be defeated either physically or even in verbal debates.
3. By putting the thumb inside the fist and pressing hard by the fingers, your negative thoughts which enhance wrong ego are automatically washed away.

It allows you to think rationally and gradually subsides the anger.

2. Do you want to punish someone by hitting hard by hand or feet?  Just go out and play cricket or football.

1. By hitting or kicking the ball hard your negative energy will be transferred to the ball.
2. Simply imagine, that you are punishing the target person and performing the act. This is displacement of energy.
3. If you have a great urge to punish someone, you will not feel at rest till you release the energy out of your system by doing so.

3. Do you throw away food, utensils or any other object in anger – then try this tip. Take a paper, smash it or make a ball out of it and throw as far as you can… OR if your surroundings allow then, Pick up a stone and throw in the river or water or sea as far as you can….

Your urge to throw out will automatically be released.

Let me explain How and Why?

1. At the time of anger, your blood flows outward so that it runs to the fingers in hand or feet and generates a desire to hit.
2. Smashing the paper or throwing stones in water transfers the outflow of energy and also relieves you.

If you have such a habit of throwing or tearing or breaking articles in anger, you must perform the above act at constant intervals.

This will automatically release the negative energy at time intervals.

4. Do you abuse or speak ill or curse when angry, use your wash room and spit in the wash basin instead of using foul language or words.

The foul energy will be released from your mouth.

5. You can even try whistling if you know how to..! Switch on some good Music as soon as you feel the anger rising in you. It will gradually calm down the heightened feelings.

It will shift your attention from troublesome thoughts or feeling of anger and change your mood.

6. Try countdown technique- Start counting from ten to one or hundred to one.

It will distract you from the stimulus which is generating anger and also gives you time to cool down and rethink about the whole situation.

7. Wash your face with water, take a bath or shower

Water will wash away your anger as well.

Why so….!
When you splash water on your face the tension in the facial muscles is relaxed and you feel calmed down.
You can simultaneously stretch your face as if you are smiling one or more times. It will make you feel pleasant and you would want to let go the anger. Taking bath or a shower also helps in a similar way by relaxing the tense muscles.

8. Drink a lot of water when you are angry

It will not only quench your thirst but also your anger. It normalizes the fast flowing blood in your veins and arteries and so you immediately cool down.

9. To overcome anger it is best to postpone anger

Time will fizzle out your negative thoughts and energy and save the unpleasant situation which could arise due to exhibition of anger.

10. If someone is very keen to stir anger in you and fight, just walk away from that situation.

Practice these instant solutions to calm the feeling of anger i.e., Post Anger Solutions. It would be much better if one can train oneself to prevent anger. Angry disposition is a faulty personality variant and holds negative connotation to it. Excessive anger or constant anger is also socially disapproved and declares a person to be maladjusted or over-anxious.
